There’s a young boy here with five barley loaves and two fish. But what good is that with this huge crowd?” John 6:9 (New Living Translation)
Five thousand men (not counting women and children) sat there that evening, waiting on Jesus. They had been fed with heaven’s bread and Jesus perceived they were also hungry physically so he said to his men, “Get them food to eat.” The Bible says that Jesus already knew what he would do but he just wanted to test his disciples. He already knew that that young boy’s meal would feed the multitude. He already knew that once he blessed and broke the bread and the fish, all those men, women and children would have enough to eat and to spare. He already knew that nobody would go home that day, unsatisfied. He already knew…. but his disciples did not.
Allow me preach this 'Feeding of the Five Thousand' in a different way to you today. You see, you are that boy’s lunch and Jesus has a multitude to feed – millions of lost souls to reach, thousands of Facebook users to bless, hundreds of market women and men to empower, thousands of university students to impact, millions of graduates to mentor, people everywhere whose eyes are on him, waiting to be fed – and God tells your boss, spouse, friends, siblings, colleagues, church members, even the devil, “I’m going to feed that multitude with this man.” “Ha!”, they sneer, “He would never be enough.”
He needs more education, she doesn’t know how to cook, he can’t manage money well, she’s not articulate, he’s not husband material, she’s not computer literate, she used to be a prostitute, he attended polytechnic, she did not study a professional course, he is not bold with the ladies, her face is too ugly…. The list of inadequacies goes on and on and on. But God has only told them because he wants to test them….
Some have told you in your face “You’re trying but you’re not good enough!” Others have treated you like trash, like you were not worth their time…. The same way the disciples dismissed the loaves and the fish…. because they did not know that that was where they would have to eat from in just a few minutes….
Don’t you just love the way the Lord handles critics? He didn’t start a lecture on the process of how he intended to work a miracle and multiply the meal. He simply smiled (I am sure he did) and with a wave of his hand ordered his disciples “Tell everyone to sit down.”
My encouragement to you today is this; while they are busy degrading and downsizing you, you just focus on getting better and pursuing your God-given assignment. Don’t wait to know all the tricks of wife-hood before you feel great at it; learn on-the-job whether your efforts are praised or not. Don’t wait to be an astute preacher before taking on the microphone; keep fanning your gift into flames and give God the glory. Get better, not bitter, because you will feed the multitude; you will deliver God’s purpose. And the ones who once felt you were not good enough will soon be called upon to gather the remnants.
People may look at you and see a mere acorn but God knows you’ll soon grow into an oak with branches reaching out to the farthest parts of the earth. It’s up to you now to walk with either God’s plan or man’s shortsighted views.
Five thousand men (besides women and children) sat down that evening waiting on Jesus. But really, they were waiting for the loaves and the fish, waiting for you.
Live again!
